The Mystery of the Missing Compass

Sam loved old things.

Whenever he visited his grandfather’s house, he would spend hours looking through the dusty shelves, opening old boxes and listening to stories about the past.

One afternoon, Grandpa was cleaning a wooden cabinet when he suddenly stopped.

“That’s strange,” he said.

Sam looked up.

“What happened?”

“My compass is missing.”

“Your old brass compass?”

Grandpa nodded.

“It belonged to my father. I always kept it in this drawer.”

He opened the drawer again.

Empty.

Sam immediately became interested.

“Maybe someone moved it.”

“Maybe,” Grandpa said. “But I haven’t touched it in years.”

Sam looked around the room.

“Where did you last use it?”

Grandpa thought for a moment.

“Many years ago, I took it on a walk through the hills behind the house.”

Sam’s eyes lit up.

“The hills?”

Grandpa smiled.

“You’re already planning an adventure, aren’t you?”

“Maybe.”

Grandpa laughed.

“Then take this.”

He handed Sam an old notebook.

Inside were several faded drawings of the hills.

One page showed a small wooden bridge, a tall pine tree and a stone shaped like a sleeping bear.

At the bottom, Grandpa had written:

North is where the adventure begins.

Sam grabbed his backpack.

“I’m going to find that compass.”

“Take your time,” Grandpa called after him. “And remember—stay on the trail.”

Sam followed the old path behind the house.

The afternoon sun shone through the trees as he climbed higher.

After twenty minutes, he found the wooden bridge from the notebook.

“First clue.”

He checked the drawing.

Next was the tall pine tree.

Sam looked around.

There were dozens of pine trees.

Then he noticed one much taller than the others.

Its trunk had a strange mark carved into it—a small arrow pointing uphill.

Sam followed the arrow.

A few minutes later, he reached a large gray rock.

It looked exactly like a sleeping bear.

Sam laughed.

“Grandpa wasn’t joking.”

He checked the notebook again.

There was one final drawing.

A circle.

Inside it was a tiny star.

Sam looked around.

Nothing.

He searched beneath the rock.

Nothing.

He checked the nearby bushes.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something unusual.

The sunlight was shining through a gap between two branches and making a small star-shaped patch of light on the ground.

Sam moved closer.

There, beneath the leaves, was a flat stone with a tiny star carved into it.

He lifted the stone.

Underneath was a narrow hole.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Sam’s heart jumped.

He opened it.

But there was no compass.

Instead, he found a note.

It said:

“If you’ve reached this place, you are following the trail exactly as I once did. But the compass isn’t here. Look where the trail begins.”

Sam stared at the note.

“Where the trail begins?”

He thought about it.

The trail began at Grandpa’s house.

He hurried back.

When he reached the garden, he noticed something he’d never paid attention to before.

Near the old gate stood a stone birdbath.

Sam walked around it.

Nothing.

Then he looked underneath.

Tucked behind one of the legs was a small metal box.

He pulled it out.

Inside was the brass compass.

Sam couldn’t believe it.

He ran inside.

“Grandpa!”

His grandfather looked up.

Sam placed the compass in his hand.

For a moment, Grandpa simply stared at it.

“I remember this,” he said quietly.

“You hid it here?”

Grandpa smiled.

“I didn’t.”

Sam looked confused.

Grandpa opened the old notebook.

Inside the back cover was a photograph of a young boy standing beside the same garden gate.

“That was my father,” Grandpa said. “He created the trail for me when I was a child. I found the compass exactly where you did.”

Sam looked at the compass.

“So you forgot where it was?”

Grandpa laughed.

“I suppose I did.”

Sam smiled.

“Then I found your mystery.”

Grandpa handed him the compass.

“Keep it for now.”

Sam looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Only if you promise one thing.”

“What?”

“Someday, make your own adventure trail for someone else.”

Sam grinned.

“I already have an idea.”

That evening, he took out a blank sheet of paper.

He drew a bridge.

Then a pine tree.

Then a sleeping bear.

And finally, he drew a little star.

At the top, he wrote:

For the next explorer.

The compass had been missing for years.

But Sam had discovered something even more valuable.

A family adventure that was waiting to be continued.

The End
